Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III Launches Congressional Campaign Today
UPDATE: Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III, the influential pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, has officially announced his candidacy for the U.S. House representing Texas’ 30th Congressional District as of Monday, October 16, 2023. Known for his passionate advocacy for social justice, Haynes aims to uplift underserved communities and drive change at the federal level.
Haynes’ announcement comes shortly after he returned to his pastoral duties following a medical leave for surgery. His commitment to community service has not only made him a beloved figure in Dallas but also a potent force in national conversations about equity and justice.
In a statement released today, Haynes said,
“I’m running to ensure that every voice in our community is heard, and everyone has access to the opportunities they deserve.”
This message resonates as he has continuously fought for social justice through church-led initiatives and scholarships.
With over $1 million donated to historically Black colleges and universities and more than $2 million in scholarships awarded to local students, Haynes has a proven track record of impactful leadership. His efforts to remove Shingle Mountain, a significant environmental hazard in southeastern Dallas, are a testament to his dedication to community issues.
Born in Dallas but raised in California due to racial discrimination, Haynes’ life story is one of resilience. He lost his father on the first day of high school but overcame adversity to graduate as valedictorian. After earning his degrees from several universities, including a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Haynes became the senior pastor at Friendship-West in 1983.
His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Leadership Award from former President Joe Biden in 2022 and induction into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame in January 2016. Haynes has also been recognized by Ebony magazine as one of the most influential African Americans in 2012.
As the election season heats up, Haynes’ campaign is expected to focus on issues including health care, education, and economic equity. His community-first approach will likely resonate with voters seeking authentic representation in Congress.
Looking ahead, Haynes joins a growing list of candidates vying for the seat, and his journey is one to watch closely. His initiative to engage young Black leaders through the Friendship-West THR!VE Intern and Leadership Program highlights his commitment to fostering the next generation of activists.
Stay tuned for more updates as Haynes rallies support and outlines his platform in the coming weeks. His campaign could significantly shift the political landscape in Texas, making this a crucial moment for both his supporters and constituents in the 30th District.
