Sally L. VanNostrand, 88, Passes Away Surrounded by Family
BREAKING: Sally L. VanNostrand, age 88, has passed away at her home in Gloversville, NY, surrounded by her loving family. The community mourns the loss of a cherished matriarch who dedicated her life to family and friends.
VanNostrand departed this life on November 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and culinary delights. Her passion for cooking and hosting family gatherings, especially her renowned Sunday Suppers, made her a beloved figure to many beyond her immediate family.
Born on October 2, 1937, to the late Emmett “Zip” Cranker and Irene Wilson Cranker Biron, Sally grew up in Gloversville. She attended Mayfield Schools and spent her early career delivering newspapers for the Leader Herald and working with leather at Potter’s Leather Co.
Sally was an active member of the Foresters Club and the Riceville Homestead, where she contributed to community activities and built lasting friendships. Her warmth and generosity extended to all who crossed her path, earning her the affectionate titles of “Ma” and “Gram” from many.
She is survived by her husband, Douglas VanNostrand, children William Sr. (Jennifer), Jodi (Tim), and James, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family reflects on the joyful memories created during her Sunday meals, featuring roast beef from Bowmans Meat Market and her famous chocolate mayonnaise cake.
Sally’s passing is felt deeply by her family and the community, especially as they remember her daughter, Deborah K. VanNostrand Holmes, who predeceased her, along with her brother, Terry W. Cranker, and grandson, Peter C. Bleyl.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to Mountain Valley Hospice to support others in need.
Calling hours are scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi, Bellinger & Stewart Family Funeral Home located at 51 Fremont Street, Gloversville. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the same location, with burial to follow in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
