San Jose State Surges Past Hawaii 45-38 in Thrilling Showdown
UPDATE: San Jose State claimed a dramatic 45-38 victory over Hawaii in the highly anticipated Tomey Legacy Game last night, showcasing an electrifying performance from wide receiver Danny Scudero, who racked up a career-high 215 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns. This win marks the Spartans’ fifth consecutive triumph in this storied matchup.
Despite trailing 31-14 at halftime, the Rainbow Warriors (6-3) mounted a fierce comeback, narrowing the gap to just one score with 1:16 remaining. However, their hopes were dashed when a late onside kick attempt rolled out of bounds, sealing the Spartans’ victory (3-5).
The contest featured two of the Mountain West’s most potent passing offenses. Hawaii’s quarterback Micah Alejado kicked off the second half with an 8-yard touchdown pass to running back Landon Sims, bringing the score to 31-21. But the Spartans quickly answered back as quarterback Walker Eget delivered a spectacular 62-yard touchdown pass to Scudero, re-establishing momentum.
Hawaii displayed resilience, with Alejado connecting with wide receiver Jackson Harris for a 68-yard touchdown to close the gap to 21-14 before halftime. Eget responded with another strike to Scudero for a 50-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 28-14.
Defensively, Jordan Pollard of SJSU made a key sack that halted a Hawaii drive, leading to a successful 24-yard field goal by Matthias Brown and pushing the Spartans’ lead to 31-14.
Eget concluded the game with an impressive 20-for-40 passing, accumulating 458 yards and two touchdowns to Scudero. In a remarkable display of teamwork, wide receivers Scudero, Leland Smith (113 yards), and Kyri Shoels (109 yards) each surpassed the 100-yard mark for the second time this season.
Hawaii’s Alejado finished strong, completing 31-for-46 for 367 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. The comeback effort continued in the fourth quarter as Hawaii cut the deficit to 38-35 after a 20-yard touchdown pass from Alejado to Pofele Ashlock Harris with 9:32 left on the clock.
The Spartans answered decisively, with Steve Chavez-Soto scoring on a 1-yard run to secure a 45-35 lead with 5:37 remaining. Chavez-Soto had a standout game, recording three rushing touchdowns. Together with Lamar Radcliffe, who tallied 97 yards, the duo combined for 150 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Looking ahead, San Jose State will host Air Force (2-6, 1-4) on Saturday, November 8, with kickoff set for 3 p.m. Fans are eager to see if the Spartans can continue their winning streak following this thrilling victory.
