Seagate Unveils 6.9TB Platters: Future of 69TB Drives is Here!
UPDATE: Seagate has just announced a game-changing breakthrough in hard drive technology with the successful development of 6.9TB platters in its laboratory. This innovation could pave the way for hard drives capable of holding between 55TB and 69TB, marking a monumental leap in data storage capabilities.
The new platters utilize heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, a method that enhances data density by applying heat during the writing process. This development more than doubles the capacity of current commercial drives, which typically feature 3TB platters in their designs. For reference, Seagate’s existing 30TB drives rely on ten 3TB platters to achieve maximum storage capacity.
Seagate’s latest innovation is significant as it highlights the physical limits of modern storage technology. By 2030, these advanced platters are expected to be integrated into official products, revolutionizing both consumer and enterprise data storage solutions.
As demand for data storage surges, particularly driven by the ongoing AI boom, Seagate plans to release intermediate 4TB, 5TB, and 6TB platters between 2027 and 2029. This gradual rollout will help bridge the gap until the 6.9TB platters are officially launched. Meanwhile, competing manufacturer Toshiba has announced plans for a 40TB HDD set for release in 2027, but some experts criticize this as insufficient in the fast-evolving market.
The high-capacity options are especially crucial for data centers and archival storage, where hard drives remain the go-to solution due to their superior capacity per dollar and long-term reliability. The recent rise in demand has already led to extended backorders for enterprise-class drives, underscoring their importance in the storage ecosystem.
Seagate’s projections reveal even more ambitious plans beyond 2031, with expectations for platters ranging from 7TB to 15TB, hinting at the possibility of petabyte-sized hard drives before 2040.
For consumers and businesses alike, this development signals a future where massive amounts of data can be stored more efficiently than ever before, with the potential to transform how we think about digital storage.
