Senate Demands NBA Action on Gambling Violations Following Indictments
URGENT UPDATE: The United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation has formally requested information from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver regarding the league’s investigation into recent gambling violations. This comes on the heels of last week’s shocking federal indictments of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA player Damon Jones, which have raised serious concerns about the integrity of professional basketball.
In a letter sent on Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), chair of the committee, emphasized that the recent indictments—part of a broader investigation involving 34 individuals—represent a significant “Congressional concern.” The committee is demanding critical documentation from the NBA, including details on its gambling policies and a comprehensive list of ongoing investigations tied to betting activities.
“Trust in the integrity of NBA games must remain steadfast and free from the influence of organized crime or gambling-related activity,” the committee members stated. They cautioned that scandals like these could undermine public confidence in all sports.
This marks the second communication from Congress to the NBA since the indictments, underscoring the seriousness of these allegations. The committee has specifically requested documents relating to any investigations into players, coaches, employees, or team owners dating back to 2020. Additionally, they seek insights into communications between the NBA and sportsbooks regarding suspicious wagers, as well as the findings from the NBA’s internal investigation of Rozier.
The indictment alleges that Rozier shared inside information, manipulated his game participation to benefit gamblers, and profited from those bets. Earlier this year, the NBA reported that it investigated unusual betting activity linked to Rozier in March 2023 but found no violations of league rules. Silver stated that the league “couldn’t find anything” amiss after Rozier cooperated fully, including surrendering his phone and participating in interviews.
Yet, the Senate committee insists on clarity regarding why Rozier was allowed to continue playing despite the serious accusations. “This Committee needs to understand the specifics of the NBA’s investigation,” they wrote, requesting transparency on how the league came to its conclusions.
As this urgent situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the NBA and its response to these serious inquiries. Public trust in sports is at stake, and the ramifications of these allegations could reshape the landscape of professional basketball.
