Suspect Arrested in Laney College Shooting of Coach John Beam
UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested in connection with the on-campus shooting of John Beam, the legendary coach and current Athletic Director at Laney College. This shocking incident took place around noon on August 24, 2023, and Beam remains in critical condition as of this morning.
The suspect was apprehended early this morning at approximately 3 a.m., after fleeing the scene with a firearm, according to Oakland Police. Authorities had been actively searching for him since the shooting occurred at the fieldhouse located at East 8th Street and Fifth Avenue, just south of Lake Merritt.
In a press conference, acting Oakland Police Chief James Beere stated that initial reports indicated an active shooter situation, prompting a swift police response. However, it was later confirmed that the incident was isolated, leading to the temporary lockdown of the college, which has since been lifted.
Laney College football player Geovanni Valverde, who was visibly shaken by the news, said, “I was shocked. It didn’t feel real. It was really a surreal moment.” Beam has significantly impacted the lives of many young athletes, including Valverde, who expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities Beam has provided.
The college’s football program gained national attention when it was featured on the Netflix series ‘Last Chance U’ in 2020, with Beam serving as head coach. The entire community is now rallying behind him as they hope for his recovery.
In an official statement, Laney College said, “At approximately noon, a senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them—and their loved ones—in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time.” The college has not disclosed Beam’s name out of respect for his privacy.
Friends and colleagues are expressing their disbelief and concern. Former Oakland police chief and basketball coach LaRonne Armstrong remarked, “What happened today sends shockwaves through the community. To see today where someone who is a pillar in our community suffers at the hands of gun violence lets me know there’s much more work that needs to be done.”
As this investigation remains active, authorities encourage anyone with information related to the incident to contact Oakland police at 510-238-3821. This developing story is capturing the attention of the community as they await further updates on Beam’s condition and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
