Toledo Commit Martece Smith Aims for NFL Glory—Focus on Playoffs Now
UPDATE: Martece Smith, a senior cornerback at Morton High School and a commit to the Toledo Rockets, is laser-focused on winning as his team heads into the sectional semifinals Friday night. Smith is determined to leave a legacy at Morton before pursuing his NFL dreams.
As Morton prepares to face the fifth-ranked Merrillville Pirates, Smith’s ambition is palpable. “It’s playoff time, so I’m really focused on that,” he stated. “I want to go far this last year with Morton before I hit college because they’ve done so much for me.” The game kicks off at 7 p.m. on October 13, 2023, in Hammond, Indiana.
Smith’s aspirations extend beyond high school football. He’s been inspired by former Toledo player Quinyon Mitchell, who was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. “The goal has always been the NFL, and Toledo, they’ve done it before,” Smith emphasized. “I know it’s possible.”
Morton’s head coach, Mac Mishler, has full faith in Smith’s abilities. “He’s just a great kid who has all the physical tools and the mental capability,” Mishler noted. “As long as he does the things he’s supposed to do over the next few years at the college level, he’s going to put himself in a position to have a chance to realize those goals.”
With a strong record of 6-3, the Governors are eager to capture their first sectional title since 2012. Smith, a 6-foot-1, 165-pound standout, has recorded 48 tackles, including three for loss, and two interceptions over two seasons. His contributions on the field are crucial for Morton’s playoff aspirations.
Smith is not just a defensive force; he brings a lively personality that energizes the team. “He can be a quiet kid, but when he loosens up, he can be very in-your-face funny,” Mishler added. “He’s got a personality that makes him fun to be around.”
As Smith prepares for his next chapter at Toledo, he remains grounded and focused. “I’m not nervous at all,” he declared, expressing eagerness to compete at the Division I level. “I’m just excited about getting to learn the game even more and to have the opportunity to expand my own game.”
With the sectional championship in sight, Smith and his teammates are locked in and ready to make their mark. “We’re feeling different this year,” he concluded, as the team aims for victory against Merrillville. Smith’s journey is just beginning, but his commitment to excellence is clear as he looks to make a lasting impact both in high school and at Toledo.
For Morton fans, this Friday night is not just another game; it’s a pivotal moment in the quest for glory. Stay tuned as Smith and the Governors strive to claim their place in history!
