U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett Launches Senate Bid, Reshaping Race
UPDATE: U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett is set to launch her highly anticipated Senate campaign today at 4:30 p.m., just hours before the candidate filing deadline. This bold move is poised to significantly reshape the race for the seat currently held by Republican John Cornyn.
If Crockett officially files, she will join a competitive March 3 Democratic primary featuring notable candidates such as former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and state Rep. James Talarico. The Democratic nominee will face off against the winner of a GOP primary that includes Cornyn, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt.
This Senate race matters immensely right now as it represents a critical opportunity for Democrats in Texas, a state that could flip to blue in a general election. Polls indicate that Democratic voters are seeking a candidate who can fiercely oppose former President Donald Trump and his policies. According to Kardal Coleman, chairman of the Dallas County Democratic Party, “Voters are looking for someone who’s unapologetic in defending our values.”
Crockett, 44, is in her second term representing District 30 in the Dallas area and is known for her outspoken criticism of Trump. Her candidacy comes on the heels of a Republican redistricting that moved her out of her current district. A Supreme Court ruling last week confirmed Texas can use the new maps for the 2026 election.
With over $4.6 million in her congressional campaign account and a recent poll showing her leading potential Democratic candidates with 31% support, Crockett is a formidable contender. Talarico and former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke each garnered 25%, while Allred trailed at 13%.
Crockett’s entry into the race not only places her as a frontrunner but also forces Talarico and Allred to reassess their strategies. Talarico, only 36, has been a rising star among progressives, raising over $6 million in just one month. His campaign has gained traction, but Crockett’s strong name recognition could siphon support from him, particularly in North Texas.
Meanwhile, Allred, 42, has attempted to distance himself from a previous loss to Ted Cruz in a high-profile Senate race. His challenge now is to prove to Democratic voters that he is the right candidate to lead a potentially grueling statewide campaign.
Crockett’s Senate bid is not just about winning a seat; it symbolizes a historic opportunity. No Black woman has ever won a statewide office in Texas, and her potential victory would mark a significant milestone in the state’s political landscape.
As the clock ticks down to the filing deadline, all eyes will be on Crockett’s announcement. The outcome of this race will be pivotal not only for Texas but for the broader national political landscape as Democrats aim to reclaim the Senate.
