Urgent Warning: Decline in COVID-19 Vaccinations Alarms NY Health Chief
UPDATE: New York’s health commissioner has issued a stark warning as COVID-19 cases surge during the flu season. Dr. Jim McDonald, of the New York State Department of Health, revealed alarming statistics, stating, “For every one person I have in the hospital attributed to flu, I have three attributed to COVID.”
As of November 26, 2025, vaccination rates for COVID-19 are a concerning 30% lower than last year, with some upstate counties reporting only 6% to 10% vaccinated. In contrast, flu vaccination rates hover between 20% and 30%. This decline poses a serious risk as families prepare for the busy holiday season, a time when gatherings can increase the spread of illness.
Dr. McDonald emphasized the need for New Yorkers to be more vigilant: “When I look at our vaccine numbers for flu across the state, they’re about the same as last year. That concerns me.” The urgency of this message comes as the holiday season approaches, a period notorious for increased social gatherings, which can lead to higher transmission rates of both COVID-19 and the flu.
“Gathering more is great, but you’re around more people,” Dr. McDonald warned. “If you get that COVID and flu vaccine, you’re going to be in better shape.” With close contact during family festivities, health officials stress that vaccinations are vital for community safety.
In response to concerns about immunity, Dr. Danielle Wales from Albany Med Health System urged caution regarding over-the-counter supplements. “It’s important to know that the supplements don’t actually treat the illness,” she cautioned. “If you get the flu and you get sick, reach out to your doctor to see if you need to do anything, especially if you have a major illness.”
As COVID-19 hospitalizations continue to rise, the call for vaccinations has never been more critical. Health experts are urging residents to act now to protect themselves and their loved ones. The holiday season should be a time of joy, not a resurgence of illness.
Stay informed and consider getting vaccinated before the celebrations begin, as health officials work tirelessly to combat the spread of these viruses. Your health and safety depend on it.
