Volkswagen Unveils T-Roc R: Hot Compact SUV with 328 HP Boost
UPDATE: Volkswagen has just unveiled the highly anticipated T-Roc R, a hot compact SUV that promises to deliver thrilling performance with 328 horsepower. Set to hit the roads this month, this new model is a significant addition to Volkswagen’s lineup, with initial customer deliveries starting immediately.
The T-Roc has already made its mark in the market, becoming Europe’s fourth best-selling model through October 2023, with an impressive 170,931 units sold. This success is primarily attributed to the ongoing popularity of the first-generation T-Roc, which has been on the market for eight years.
As Volkswagen gears up for the T-Roc R, the vehicle is currently shrouded in camouflage, but early images suggest a fierce appearance, including angrier bumpers and upgraded brakes. The T-Roc R features a distinctive Akrapovic quad-exhaust system and 20-inch forged wheels equipped with wider tires for enhanced grip.
Under the hood, the T-Roc R shares the turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with the latest Golf R, producing 328 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. However, in a notable shift towards sustainability, this model will incorporate a mild-hybrid setup designed to meet the upcoming Euro 7 regulations. While power output is not expected to exceed that of the Golf R, the hybrid technology aims to enhance efficiency.
Volkswagen’s decision to electrify its performance vehicles aligns with broader industry trends, as the company seeks to adapt to stricter emissions standards. The anticipated shift marks a significant change for the Golf R, which may also adopt a mild-hybrid system in the future. However, the beloved six-speed manual transmission will not make a return, as the T-Roc R will be exclusively paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and feature 4Motion all-wheel drive.
Despite its appeal, the T-Roc R will not be available in the U.S. market, joining the Golf R wagon, which is also absent from American shores. Meanwhile, production of the Touareg R SUV is set to wrap up by 2026, further signaling Volkswagen’s pivot towards electrification.
Looking ahead, a fully electric R model is not a question of if but when. Volkswagen is already teasing a combustion-free Polo GTI, and future R models are expected to be powered entirely by electric motors.
As Volkswagen continues to innovate and adapt to market demands, the T-Roc R stands out as a symbol of the brand’s commitment to performance and sustainability. Keep an eye on this exciting development as more details emerge in the coming weeks.
