UPDATE: A woman is taking legal action against the Buffalo Police Department after suffering a gunshot wound during an incident involving a probationary officer. Courtney Miller, aged 22, was shot in the thigh around 5 a.m. on June 11, 2023, while at the residence of former Lancaster police officer John Doe.

The incident unfolded as Miller was attending what was described as a social gathering. Reports indicate that the officer, whose name has not been publicly disclosed, was handling a firearm when it discharged accidentally, striking Miller in her right leg. The injury required immediate medical attention, and Miller has since undergone treatment for her wound.

Miller has filed a lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages, citing negligence on the part of the Buffalo Police Department. The lawsuit alleges that the officer’s actions were reckless and that the department failed to provide adequate training for its probationary staff.

This case raises significant concerns about police training and safety protocols, especially in light of recent discussions surrounding police conduct nationwide. As the legal proceedings begin, the community is left questioning the safety measures in place for officers still in training.

Miller’s attorney stated, “Our client deserves justice for the injuries she sustained due to the carelessness of a police officer. We are committed to holding the department accountable.”

The Buffalo Police Department has acknowledged the incident but has not yet issued a formal response to the lawsuit. As this case develops, it will be crucial to monitor how it may impact both police training policies and community relations in Buffalo.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story unfolds.
