Kino Lorber Acquires Argentine Film ‘The Currents’ for 2026 Release
Kino Lorber has secured the North American distribution rights for The Currents, a psychological drama directed by Argentine filmmaker Milagros Mumenthale. This marks Mumenthale’s third feature film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) earlier this year, showcased in the Platform section.
The narrative follows Lina, played by Isabel Aimé González Sola, an accomplished artist and designer who experiences a traumatic near-drowning incident while accepting an award for her fashion career in Switzerland. The event deeply affects her, leading to a severe aversion to water and a gradual disintegration of her life as she grapples with the aftermath.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Jon Frosch praised The Currents, calling it “an uncommon mix of stylistic rigor and feeling.” His review highlighted the film’s nuanced approach, noting its “generosity” and avoidance of manipulative storytelling techniques. Such commendations position Mumenthale’s work as one to watch among cinephiles and industry professionals.
Kino Lorber plans to release The Currents theatrically in 2026, followed by a distribution across multiple platforms. “We’re thrilled to bring Milagros Mumenthaler’s assured third feature The Currents to North American audiences,” stated Karoliina Dwyer, vice president of acquisitions at Kino Lorber. Dwyer negotiated the deal with Jennyfer Gautier, head of sales at Luxbox.
Dwyer further described the film as “a fascinating, tense character study with stylistic nods to Hitchcock,” emphasizing its deliberate pacing and exploration of themes such as fear, shame, and trauma. The collaboration between Mumenthaler and González Sola is expected to resonate with audiences, reflecting the power of exceptional filmmaking.
Produced by Eugenia Mumenthaler, David Epiney, Violeta Bava, and Rosa Martínez Rivero, The Currents is a joint production of Alina Film and Ruda Cine. This partnership showcases the growing influence of Argentine cinema on the international stage, as films like The Currents garner attention for their compelling narratives and artistic depth.
As anticipation builds for its release, The Currents is poised to make a significant impact in the North American film landscape, highlighting the talent emerging from Argentina.
