Thanksgiving Travel Surge: Upstate N.Y. Airports Brace for Rush
UPDATE: This Thanksgiving is set to break records as the busiest travel period in over 15 years, with tens of thousands expected to fly out of upstate New York airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that following the lifting of unprecedented flight restrictions, airports are returning to full capacity, making this a critical travel moment for millions.
Albany International Airport is preparing for a major influx of passengers. According to Matt Hunter, director of communications at the airport, “Our busiest days, which are today, Wednesday, and Sunday, will see over 5,000 passengers departing alone, with a similar number arriving.” This surge is part of a larger trend as more than 17.8 million people will board flights nationwide for their Thanksgiving destinations.
Among those traveling are Jason Frazier and his children, AJ and MJ, who are adjusting their travel plans. “Originally, I wanted to go a day earlier, but they didn’t have available flights,” Jason shared. “We’re leaving Saturday instead of Sunday because of their school schedule. I don’t want to risk getting stuck coming back from Fort Worth.”
The roadways will also be bustling, with AAA forecasting at least 73 million drivers hitting the highways—an increase of 1.3 million from last year. Travelers like Gina Martino Trubites, who is heading to Washington D.C., shared, “It’s a really nice drive. It only takes us about seven and a half to eight hours. This time of year, it’s much easier than dealing with the airport chaos.”
Families are making strategic plans as well. Tiffany Riefstahl, a self-proclaimed “passenger princess,” is traveling to Massachusetts and Connecticut. “I would rather have people come to my house, but since we moved away from family, it makes more sense for us to go where everyone else is,” she explained, emphasizing the emotional impact of holiday travel.
As millions prepare to travel, experts urge vigilance. Whether driving or flying, it’s crucial to be aware of surroundings, allow extra time for travel, and stay informed about weather conditions. With the holiday rush in full swing, both the skies and roads are set for a busy Thanksgiving.
