Two Killed in Fast-Moving Thanksgiving Fire in Orange, NJ
URGENT UPDATE: Two people tragically lost their lives in a devastating fire that swept through a home in Orange, New Jersey, on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2023. The fire ignited around 5 p.m. on Mosswood Avenue, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, firefighters responded quickly, but the flames had already claimed two lives inside the residence. The identities of the victims have not yet been released as authorities continue to investigate the cause of this tragic incident.
Claire Stevens, a neighbor just doors down from the affected home, expressed her concern for the family. “My grandson was good friends with one of the young people that lived there. And she’s out of the country right now. I’m just really concerned that maybe she doesn’t know about her relatives that live in the house that might have been affected by the fire,” Stevens shared.
In the aftermath, community members gathered to offer support, with many witnessing neighbors taking refuge in a nearby NJ Transit bus to stay warm. The American Red Cross has stepped in, providing emergency financial assistance to a family of eight, covering temporary lodging, food, and other immediate needs.
Matthew Mehr, another local resident, reminisced about the victims, saying, “I just know that they kept their yard really nice, and whenever I would go for a walk or run, they were super friendly.” The emotional toll of this event is palpable, as neighbors come together to remember those lost and support the grieving family.
As the community rallies around those impacted, authorities are on the scene, investigating the fire’s origin. The tragic event has left many in Orange grappling with the loss and the urgent need for answers.
Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops and authorities release more information regarding the victims and the fire’s cause.
