Churches Host Winter Events and Charity Drives This December
This December, several churches across the region are hosting a variety of events, ranging from festive gatherings to charitable initiatives. These activities aim to foster community spirit and support those in need during the holiday season.
Community Christmas Celebrations
CrossPoint Church, located at 214 S. Court St., will hold a “Favorite Things” Women’s Christmas Party on December 8 at 18:30. Participants are encouraged to bring three of the same wrapped gift, valued between $5 and $10, which should represent their favorite item from the past year. Registration for this event is available online at the church’s website.
Similarly, St. Matthias Roman Catholic Church at 101 W. Burrell Drive will host a winter workshop on December 1 from 17:30 to 19:30. Attendees will create holiday decorations using assorted fresh cut greenery and will receive guidance on using a 12-inch planter. This workshop will take place at Niemeyers Landscape Supply, and those interested can contact the church for further details at (219) 663-2201.
Regular Worship Services and Charity Initiatives
On Sundays, Marquette Park United Methodist Church, located at 215 N. Grand Blvd., welcomes worshippers at 11:15. Following the service, refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall, creating an opportunity for fellowship among attendees.
At Faith United Church of Christ, situated at 3030 175th St., services occur every Sunday at 10:00, followed by a time for coffee and socializing.
Saint Joseph Catholic Church, located at 5304 Hohman Ave., will host “Donut Sunday” on the last Sunday of each month after the 09:00 Mass, where complimentary coffee and donuts will be available at the church hall.
In a charitable effort, the Diocese of Gary Office at 9292 Broadway is collecting donations of hats, scarves, and gloves for the Caps for Kids campaign through January. This initiative, in collaboration with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, aims to provide warmth for children in need. Donations can be made at the office, and financial contributions are also accepted by mailing checks to “Caps for Kids,” c/o St. Vincent de Paul, 2714 169th St., Hammond, IN 46323. Further, Our Lady of Queen of Martyrs – South Campus will celebrate Simbang Gabi on December 20 at 16:00. This Filipino Christmas tradition includes nine days of Masses, and a reception will follow the service, presided over by Bishop Robert J. McClory.
In Munster, St. Thomas More Church will kick off its annual Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale on November 28, with sales available from 16:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 20:00 on weekends. Proceeds from the sale will benefit local charities, and families can enjoy treats for children while selecting their perfect tree.
Lastly, Valparaiso Baptist Church is organizing a Nursing Home Ministry event on November 30 from 14:30 to 15:30 at Golden Living Center, 251 Sturdy Road. This event welcomes community members to minister to seniors at Brickyard Healthcare, with all interested individuals invited to participate.
