UPDATE: Holiday shopping is in full swing as shoppers flock to stores like Target in Fresno, California, for the best deals. Early Friday morning, crowds formed outside Target, with shoppers eager to grab discounted items like AirPods and Beats headphones before the holiday rush escalates.

While the season brings joy, it also triggers significant stress for many. Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist Coraline Robinson from Balance Treatment Center emphasizes that the pressure of high expectations can be overwhelming. “When we have high expectations, they can only go down, right?” Robinson stated.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, 28% of Americans reported increased holiday-related stress last year, with major stressors including gift buying, family dynamics, and grief. As the holiday season approaches, experts urge individuals to manage their stress effectively.

Robinson suggests several strategies to cope. “Taking a few deep breaths and finding a private room can make a huge difference when under stress with family,” she advises. Additionally, engaging in physical activity can be a great way to calm nerves before gatherings. “We want to depress our nervous systems,” she explained. “By ramping it up with exercise, we enter family events calm and relaxed.”

Nutrition also plays a crucial role in managing holiday stress. Robinson highlights the importance of monitoring alcohol and sugar intake during this period. “It’s vital to be mindful of what we consume,” she warns.

In terms of holiday spending, Robinson recommends taking breaks from the constant marketing bombardment. “There’s going to be a lot of pushing and marketing right now. It’s beneficial to lose yourself in an audiobook or podcast,” she suggests.

Overall, experts stress that it is perfectly acceptable to step back from the holiday hustle and prioritize self-care. As the holiday season intensifies, keeping these strategies in mind may help mitigate stress and promote well-being.
