Jalen Williams Returns as Thunder Extend Win Streak to 11
UPDATE: In a thrilling return, Jalen Williams made his season debut, scoring 11 points and providing 8 assists as the Oklahoma City Thunder clinched their 11th consecutive win with a narrow 123-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. This win propels the Thunder into the knockout round of the NBA Cup, securing a 19-1 start, the fifth best in NBA history.
Williams’ long-awaited return follows two surgeries on his right wrist, including a procedure in July 2023 to repair a torn ligament. Despite missing the first 19 games of the season, his presence was felt immediately on the court, playing 29 minutes and making crucial plays to help the defending champions maintain their dominance.
The Thunder have not only excelled without Williams but have also showcased their strength this season, finishing 4-0 in West Group A. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the team with a game-high 37 points, including 15 points in the last seven minutes, highlighting the team’s resilience and depth.
“The goal for tonight was to get in a rhythm, but it’s an adjustment,”
Williams stated following the game. His comeback was not just a personal milestone but a pivotal moment for the Thunder as they eye another championship run.
Williams acknowledged the challenge of returning to high-level play, stating,
“Defense is easy for me… Offensively, it will take time. I’ve had two hand surgeries, and I’m still figuring out my jump shot and dribbling.”
His determination to contribute defensively is a testament to his competitive spirit.
However, his late start means Williams is ineligible for postseason honors, impacting his potential earnings, including a $287 million super maximum contract kicker in his five-year, $239 million extension.
The Thunder’s impressive start signals their intent to be serious contenders this season, with Williams’ return adding a new dynamic to an already powerful lineup. Fans are eager to see how his performance evolves as he gains momentum after an extended absence.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Williams and the Thunder. Will they continue their historic run? The next game is critical as they aim to solidify their position as a top contender in the league.
