Urgent: Kiley’s Fix It Act Aims to Extend Health Care Subsidies
URGENT UPDATE: Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., are racing against the clock to address escalating health care costs for millions of Americans. With current Affordable Care Act credits set to expire at the end of the year, Rep. Kevin Kiley and Rep. Sam Liccardo have unveiled the Fix It Act, a proposal designed to extend crucial subsidies for an additional two years.
This initiative is urgent as it impacts an estimated 22 million Americans. Kiley emphasized the stakes during an interview, stating, “On average, people’s healthcare premiums will double.” The impending expiration of these credits threatens independent contractors, small business owners, and retirees not yet eligible for Medicare, creating a potential crisis for those who can least afford it.
Before the holiday recess, President Donald Trump was reportedly considering measures to tackle this issue, yet his enthusiasm for extending the credits remains low. Kiley mentioned that the White House’s prior considerations mirrored the essence of the Fix It Act. “We do need to act with a sense of urgency here,” he argued, calling on Congress to take proactive measures.
Kiley noted that support for the proposal is growing among Republicans, despite challenges in gathering full party backing. He anticipates that the Senate could vote on a version of the extension by December 12. “Hopefully the Speaker will understand this is a priority for the members and a priority for the American people,” Kiley stated, urging swift action.
As the deadline approaches, the potential implications for health care affordability loom large over the nation. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as millions of Americans await clarity on their health care future.
