Urgent Winter Weather Advisory: 3 Inches of Snow Expected Today
UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has just been issued for South Central Pennsylvania, warning residents of significant snowfall today. The National Weather Service confirms that between 3 a.m. and 1 p.m., up to 3 inches of snow may accumulate across Fulton, Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties.
This advisory comes amid mixed precipitation that could include sleet and freezing rain, creating hazardous conditions for morning commuters. The weather service warns that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and treacherous. Residents are urged to prepare for difficult travel conditions during the busy morning hours.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” the advisory states. “Slow down and use caution while traveling.” With winter weather contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities each year, the risks are high. Officials emphasize the importance of prioritizing safety by adjusting driving habits in response to icy conditions.
As temperatures hover near freezing, motorists should assume that icy spots exist on roadways. Be vigilant for ice accumulating on power lines and tree branches, which pose additional risks of snapping and falling. If travel is necessary, opt for routes with fewer trees and power lines to minimize danger.
The National Weather Service recommends sharing travel plans with family or friends and ensuring that your vehicle is prepared with essential winter supplies. These include a full gas tank, windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
If you find yourself stranded, remain calm and inform someone of your situation. Avoid attempting to walk to safety, instead signal for help by attaching a cloth to your vehicle’s antenna or mirror. Visibility is crucial—keep your dome light and flashers on to attract attention.
As snow plows work to clear the roads, keep a safe distance and only pass when conditions are clear. Before starting your journey, check the latest road conditions to ensure informed travel decisions.
Stay safe during this winter weather event and heed these vital driving tips to reduce the risk of accidents on slippery roads. For the latest updates and further information, visit your local news sources or call 511 for real-time road conditions.
