URGENT UPDATE: Starting next week, shelters across Massachusetts are waiving adoption fees for adult dogs aged one and older as part of a crucial holiday initiative. The week-long event, titled “Snow Place Like Home,” runs from December 8 to December 14, 2023, aiming to find loving homes for dogs in need.

According to the MSPCA-Angell and its five shelter partners, this initiative is designed to combat the alarming slowdown in adult dog adoptions, particularly among larger breeds. “We started the coalition last year with the goal of reducing euthanasia in shelters across the state and improving the overall well-being of animals that call the Commonwealth home,” said Jamie Garabedian, project manager in the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division.

The focus of the “Snow Place Like Home” adopt-a-thon is on older and elderly dogs, who still have plenty of love and energy to offer. “There are a lot of misconceptions about adopting older dogs, like they can’t be playful or energetic,” Garabedian added. She emphasized that larger dogs often face unnecessary barriers due to myths about their exercise needs.

This initiative not only highlights the need for more adoptions but also seeks to reshape public perceptions about older and larger dogs. “All dogs are different,” Garabedian pointed out, urging potential adopters to consider the unique qualities of each pet.

Participating shelters encourage the community to visit and adopt during this special event. For more information, visit mspca.org/dogs and join the movement to give these deserving dogs a second chance.

The urgency to act is clear. With the holiday season approaching, now is the time to make a difference in the lives of these dogs and reduce the number of animals facing euthanasia. Be part of the solution and consider adopting during the “Snow Place Like Home” week. Share this news and help spread the word!
