O’Dowd Captures 5-AA NorCal Title with 23-20 Victory Over Chico
UPDATE: Bishop O’Dowd has triumphed in a nail-biting finish, securing the CIF 5-AA NorCal title with a 23-20 victory over Chico on the night of November 17, 2023. The Dragons, who traveled nearly three hours from Oakland, California, fought valiantly in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
In a gripping final showdown, O’Dowd’s defense made a critical fourth-down sack on Chico quarterback John Bernardez with just 90 seconds left, sealing their victory and allowing the players to celebrate their hard-fought championship. This win marks a significant achievement for O’Dowd, replicating the success of their 2016 team that also captured this classification.
Junior running back Lamar Ellis was instrumental in the victory, contributing two touchdowns and showcasing extraordinary athleticism following his five-touchdown performance the previous week. Ellis opened the scoring with a 17-yard run that gave O’Dowd an early 6-0 lead. Although the initial extra point attempt was blocked, the Dragons maintained momentum.
Chico responded quickly, with Bernardez connecting on a touchdown pass to Jake Detmer, putting the home team ahead 7-6. O’Dowd nearly regained the lead when fullback OC Lehner attempted a one-yard touchdown but was thwarted after a timeout. The first half ended with a 24-yard field goal from Zach Brien, giving O’Dowd a slim 9-7 lead.
The second half saw Chico take charge with a striking 80-yard touchdown drive, capped by Bernardez’s 10-yard scoring run. The Dragons quickly retaliated as Trevor Erickson returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, putting O’Dowd back in front 16-14.
As the game progressed, Ellis delivered a stunning highlight reel play—a remarkable touchdown run that extended the Dragons’ lead to 23-14. Despite Chico narrowing the gap with another touchdown by Bernardez, the Dragons’ defense held strong, preventing any further scoring.
With a crucial trip to the state finals on the line, O’Dowd’s defense rose to the occasion. The victory not only signifies a regional championship but also sets the stage for the Dragons to seek their second state championship next week against Christian-El Cajon in Southern California.
Fans and supporters are eager to witness how the team will build on this momentum as they prepare for what promises to be another thrilling match. The excitement is palpable, and all eyes will be on O’Dowd as they aim to replicate their past success on the biggest stage.
As the final whistle blew, the Dragons could finally breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they had claimed the coveted title in a game that will be remembered for its intensity and determination.
