After experiencing severe postpartum depression and anxiety, Autumn Gavora embarked on a transformative journey that included therapy, medication, and new experiences. A year and a half after the birth of her son, a panic attack led her to seek help, revealing the depth of her struggles.

Gavora had prepared for motherhood by researching postpartum depression, believing that knowledge would shield her from its effects. However, after her son was born in 2023, she found herself grappling with intense feelings of anxiety that made leaving the house daunting. Recognizing that her mental health was deteriorating, she sought medical assistance following a panic attack that landed her in the emergency room.

In the hospital, an ER doctor assured her that her feelings were a common response and not her fault. This pivotal moment prompted her to begin therapy and medication, setting the stage for her recovery.

Embracing New Experiences

To further aid her healing, Gavora’s husband encouraged her to try one new experience each month. Although challenging at first, she discovered that these activities helped rebuild her confidence and foster connections with others.

The first experience she chose was a Pilates class, which had recently opened in her town. Intrigued by the calm and strength displayed on social media, she decided to attend. Despite her initial nerves and guilt for taking time for herself, she pushed through.

Pilates quickly became a cherished part of her routine, providing a crucial hour of respite from daily stressors. Attending classes four to five times a week, Gavora has not only improved her physical strength but also found a way to quiet her racing thoughts.

Reconnecting with Family and Friends

The journey to reclaim her mental health also led Gavora to reconnect with her husband. After nearly two years without a date night due to anxiety surrounding childcare, she stepped outside her comfort zone by signing them up for a culinary experience at Trilith Guesthouse.

During the six-course meal, they enjoyed whiskey pairings while sitting in front of the chef. This experience reinforced the importance of nurturing their relationship post-parenthood and allowed Gavora to rediscover her sense of self. Dressing up for the occasion made her realize that self-perception profoundly affects mental health.

Another memorable experience was a pasta-making class at a local Italian restaurant, where she spent three hours learning to make fresh ravioli from scratch. This not only satisfied her love for cooking but also brought joy and accomplishment.

Gavora noted that the friendships she developed through these activities were unexpected yet invaluable. She met new friends at a book signing, her Pilates studio, and a local book club, all of whom provided support and understanding.

Reflecting on her journey, Gavora acknowledges that her attempts to protect herself and her son initially isolated them both. She learned that seeking help was essential, and she is grateful for the support from her doctor, husband, and the benefits of medication.

Gavora concludes that while motherhood has changed her both physically and mentally, taking care of oneself is paramount. Her path to rediscovering joy and confidence has been a winding one, but it has undeniably been rewarding.
