Mavericks Coach Jason Kidd Evaluates Rookie Flagg as PG
BREAKING: Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has praised rookie Cooper Flagg for his impressive performance as starting point guard in the final two preseason games, but has not yet confirmed if Flagg will retain that role as the season begins. After the Mavericks defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 121-94 on Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena, Kidd stated, “There’s a lot of good, positive stories here, and so we have some time to make a decision.”
Flagg, just 18 years old and standing at 6-foot-8, transitioned to point guard after initially playing forward during his time at Duke. In his two games as point guard, he averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. Kidd emphasized the need for Flagg to improve his game management skills, stating, “He’s got to keep an index of who got shots… But I think [Flagg] has done an incredible job of handling the situation of running the team.”
The Mavericks faced challenges early against the Lakers, trailing 22-10 before Flagg was substituted out. Concerns arose regarding the team’s spacing and shooting, as starters struggled with a 3-of-15 performance from beyond the arc. Flagg acknowledged his own mental lapses, saying, “I made some mental lapses today, time and score situations… Can’t let a hot player keep getting looks.”
Kidd noted that despite Flagg’s struggles, particularly against Lakers player Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points within the first few minutes, his competitive spirit will enable him to adapt quickly. “No matter if you’re 6-4, 6-2 or 6-8… it’s hard,” Kidd remarked on the challenges Flagg faces in the league.
As the Mavericks prepare for the season opener, all eyes will be on whether Flagg will remain in the pivotal point guard position. The decision is crucial not only for the team’s lineup but also for the rookie’s development in the NBA. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Kidd will finalize his starting five as the clock ticks down to the season’s start.
Stay tuned for updates on Cooper Flagg’s role and the Mavericks’ strategies as they embark on the upcoming NBA season.
