Repairs Begin to Restore Power at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

Work is actively underway to restore the damaged power supply at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This effort follows a precarious four-week outage during which the plant relied on backup generators. On Saturday, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed that special ceasefire zones were established by both Russian and Ukrainian forces to facilitate the necessary repairs.

The IAEA described the restoration of off-site power as “crucial for nuclear safety and security.” The agency noted that both sides engaged constructively to enable the complex repair plan to proceed. Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk confirmed the involvement of Ukrainian specialists in restoring power lines, emphasizing the need for stable operations and connections to the Ukrainian power grid to prevent potential nuclear incidents.

This restoration marks the 42nd instance since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 that power lines to the plant have required repair. Ukraine has consistently accused Russia of deliberately targeting its power infrastructure. The Zaporizhzhia plant, which is Europe’s largest nuclear facility, has been operating on diesel backup generators since September 23, 2023, when its last external power line was severed due to attacks attributed to both nations.

The plant remains under Russian control, having been seized early in the invasion, and is not currently operational. Nonetheless, it requires a reliable power supply to cool its six shutdown reactors and manage spent fuel, thereby avoiding any catastrophic incidents.

Escalating Hostilities and Ongoing Attacks

As repairs commenced, Russia intensified its aerial bombardment of Ukraine, launching three missiles and 164 drones overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. The Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 136 of these drones. Local officials reported that two women, aged 51 and 53, were injured when Russian drones targeted a gas station in the Zarichny district of Sumy, located in northeastern Ukraine.

In a related statement, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed to have shot down 41 Ukrainian drones overnight, highlighting the ongoing conflict’s intensity.

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Conflict

Notably, the repair efforts began shortly after discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. Their meeting was characterized by Trump as “very interesting and cordial.” Reports indicate that the talks included discussions about the potential U.S. provision of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, possibly in exchange for Ukrainian drones, although specific details were not disclosed.

Trump expressed optimism about persuading Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict, stating that he believed significant progress was being made. However, Russia has shown no indication of a willingness to cease hostilities, and Trump has exhibited frustration with Putin’s actions in recent months.

In a separate initiative, First Lady Melania Trump revealed her efforts to work with the Russian leader to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children to their families, a personal undertaking she claimed to have pursued independently.
