Experts Warn of Rising Sports Betting Addiction Risks as Season Starts

As the football season gains momentum, mental health experts are raising alarms about the potential for casual sports betting to develop into a serious addiction. According to licensed mental health counselor Nicole Davidson-Harshaw, the ease of access to betting platforms can lead individuals to underestimate the risks involved.

The shift in societal attitudes toward sports betting is evident. Data from Pew Research indicates a growing skepticism among younger adults. In 2022, only 22% of men under 30 viewed legal sports betting as detrimental to society; this figure has now surged to 47%. Similarly, among women in the same age group, the perception has shifted from 25% to 35% over the past three years.

Davidson-Harshaw emphasizes that the addictive nature of gambling can overshadow essential aspects of life. “Hygiene, social skills, eating habits, all of those things tend to take a back seat because of the addictive behavior,” she noted. The normalization of betting practices can transform what is meant to be a leisurely activity into a compulsive behavior.

Despite the ongoing legalization of sports betting, including in states like Florida, experts stress the significance of responsible gambling. Davidson-Harshaw encourages individuals to adopt a structured approach to their betting habits. “Be honest with yourself,” she advises. “Maybe even schedule hours when you will do the sports betting. This way, it becomes a planned activity rather than something that controls you.”

Recognizing personal limits is crucial to ensure that gambling remains a form of entertainment rather than a source of distress. Experts advocate for awareness and proactive measures that can mitigate the risks associated with sports betting.

As the football season progresses, the conversation around responsible gambling is likely to intensify. With the increasing accessibility of platforms such as FanDuel and DraftKings, it is essential for bettors to remain vigilant about their habits. Understanding the fine line between enjoyment and addiction can help individuals navigate the landscape of sports betting more safely.
