Sham Fest Thrills Bideford with Music and Local Brews
The annual charity event, Sham Fest, delighted beer enthusiasts and music lovers in Bideford over the weekend, successfully raising funds for local causes. Held at the Pollyfield Centre, the festival kicked off on the evening of October 17, 2023, offering attendees a vibrant mix of live music, craft gins, rum, cider, and a diverse selection of ales from local breweries.
The festivities carried on throughout Saturday, featuring performances by local musicians that appealed to a wide range of tastes. Organiser Huw Thomas expressed his satisfaction with this year’s turnout, noting an increase in attendance compared to the previous year. He stated, “The numbers of people were definitely up on last year and there was a lovely atmosphere with everyone enjoying the beers and the music.”
Sham Fest not only provided entertainment but also aimed to support community initiatives. The event is projected to raise over £2,700 for the Food Pantry and other local charities, surpassing last year’s total of £2,244. Thomas highlighted the importance of the festival in fostering community spirit, mentioning that it has transformed into a cherished gathering for both residents of East-The-Water and the wider Bideford community.
A key highlight of the festival was the judging competition for the best ales. “Our judging competition was great fun, and I think having our Sham Fest Champion Ale, plus silver and bronze medal winners, helped people who weren’t sure which of the 21 beers to try!” Thomas remarked.
The success of Sham Fest relied heavily on the support of local businesses that sponsored various drinks, musicians who performed for free, and volunteers who assisted behind the bar. Thomas extended his gratitude to everyone involved, stating, “Sham Fest wouldn’t take place without the backing of local businesses and the wonderful volunteers.”
As the festival concluded, attendees left with fond memories and a sense of community, ready to look forward to next year’s event. The combination of local brews, engaging music, and a warm atmosphere has solidified Sham Fest’s position as a highlight on Bideford’s social calendar.
