Balloons Disrupt Flights at Vilnius Airport Over Two Nights

Flights at Lithuania’s main airport experienced significant disruptions over the weekend due to suspected sightings of balloons believed to be involved in the smuggling of cigarettes from neighboring Belarus. The incidents led to air traffic suspensions at Vilnius Airport for two consecutive nights, raising concerns about border security and smuggling activities.

On October 21, 2023, air traffic was halted at 9:35 p.m. and did not resume until 3:30 a.m. the next day. This interruption resulted in four flight cancellations and seven diversions. The previous night, a similar air traffic suspension affected both Vilnius and Kaunas Airport, leading to a total of ten cancellations and four diverted flights.

Security Measures Under Review

These disruptions followed an early morning incident on October 18, 2023, where airspace was also temporarily closed. In response to the balloon sightings, Lithuania’s two border crossings with Belarus—at Medininkai and Šalčininkai—were closed for several hours, although they have since been reopened.

In the wake of these events, Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė has indicated that the government may need to consider closing the border with Belarus for an extended period. She convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Commission to discuss potential measures to address the ongoing threat.

The government is also exploring the introduction of stricter penalties for smugglers. Ruginienė emphasized that clear warnings are being communicated to Belarus, stating that activities disrupting strategic facilities like airports will provoke a stern response.

The head of Lithuania’s border guard recently informed public broadcaster LRT that since the first sightings of smuggling balloons in 2023, there has been no documented case of these balloons transporting anything other than illegal cigarettes.
