Luigi Mangione, currently incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, is finding unexpected comfort in the music of Taylor Swift and Charli XCX. In a recently circulated fan letter, verified by TMZ, Mangione expressed his gratitude for their songs, particularly highlighting Swift’s track “Cardigan.” He admitted that prior to his incarceration, he had not actively listened to either artist but decided to explore their music after a false list of his favorite musicians went viral on social media.

While trying to pass the time by listening to music during his daily laps, Mangione encountered some resistance from fellow inmates. He recounted an incident involving another inmate known as “King,” who criticized his choice of songs and ultimately influenced a change in his playlist. Following this exchange, Mangione shifted his listening habits to Lil Durk instead.

In his letter, Mangione also took a moment to reflect on the small pleasures he appreciates while serving his time. He mentioned the meals provided at the facility and the support he receives from fans through letters, which have become a source of encouragement for him.

Mangione faces serious legal challenges, having been charged with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, on December 4, 2024. Both state and federal authorities have brought charges against him, with the federal case potentially resulting in a death penalty sentence if he is convicted of murder with a firearm.

At this time, attempts to reach out to Mangione’s representatives for further comments have not resulted in a response. His situation continues to develop as the legal proceedings unfold, but for now, it appears that music serves as a temporary respite amid the challenges of incarceration.
