Miyu Yamashita Clinches Maybank Championship in Thrilling Playoff
Miyu Yamashita of Japan triumphed at the LPGA Maybank Championship on Sunday, claiming victory after a gripping three-way playoff at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. This marks her second career title, following her win at the Women’s British Open in August 2023, solidifying her status as a rising star in women’s golf.
The 24-year-old secured the win with a decisive birdie on the first playoff hole, while her competitors, Hye-Jin Choi of South Korea and Australia’s Hannah Green, both settled for pars. Yamashita’s final score of 18-under 270, including a remarkable round of 65, allowed her to surge up the leaderboard and clinch the championship.
Choi entered the final round with a commanding four-stroke lead but faced challenges in converting crucial putts, ultimately slipping to a runner-up finish. Despite this setback, the 26-year-old has now achieved 29 career top-10 finishes but is still in search of her first tour victory after leading in three tournaments and finishing second each time.
Green, who recently contributed to Australia’s victory at the International Crown, also showcased her skills with a solid round of 68 that featured seven birdies and three bogeys. Her final birdie on the last hole allowed her to join Yamashita and Choi in the playoff, creating an intense finish to the event.
As the tournament progressed, rain caused a delay, adding to the suspense among the competitors. Choi managed to regain momentum with a crucial birdie at the par-4 16th after the weather cleared, momentarily boosting her hopes.
Strong performances were also noted from other competitors, with world number one Jeeno Thitikul finishing tied for fourth at 17-under after a round of 68. Thitikul, a consistent contender in Malaysia, faced a bogey on the 16th, which hampered her chances for a breakthrough win. China’s Liu Yan and Japan’s Akie Iwai, along with South Koreans A Lim Kim and Kim Sei-Young, all finished tied for fourth place, further illustrating the competitive nature of the event.
Defending champion Yin Ruoning concluded her tournament with a round of 70, landing in 12th place at 14-under 274, while fellow competitor Brooke Henderson also shot a 70, finishing tied for 27th.
With the Maybank Championship wrapping up, the LPGA now heads to Japan for the Japan Classic, bringing an end to its five-week Asian tour. As the season progresses, golfers like Yamashita continue to inspire and excite fans worldwide with their exceptional talent and perseverance on the course.
