Salt Lake City’s Suntrapp Bar Closes Amid Unionization and Shutdown
URGENT UPDATE: The Suntrapp, a beloved LGBTQ+ bar in Salt Lake City, has announced it will close its doors permanently on October 31, 2025, amid a significant unionization push and ongoing government shutdown. This closure marks a devastating loss for both employees who counted on their jobs and patrons who relied on the bar as a vital safe space.
In a statement released late Friday, management expressed their disappointment, stating, “During the government shutdown, we’ve tried to engage in good faith… Sadly, the financial impact of consistent protests has made it impossible for us to remain open.” The shutdown has had ripple effects nationwide, impacting federal food aid and heating assistance for millions.
The closure comes after a group of employees at The Suntrapp filed for union representation weeks ago. Management expressed support for their employees’ rights, stating they were prepared for a formal vote conducted by the National Labor Relations Board. However, due to the shutdown, the NLRB has been closed, halting the election process.
The bar’s management highlighted the urgency of the situation, saying, “We were committed to engaging in that process… Unfortunately, because of the government shutdown, the election process was stopped.” This unexpected turn of events has placed significant financial strain on The Suntrapp, which has been a cornerstone of the local LGBTQ+ community for years.
While the management remains hopeful for a future resolution, they have not confirmed what that path may look like. “We will do our best to provide an update on the future of the Suntrapp as soon as we have more information,” they stated.
This closure underscores the profound impact of the government shutdown not only on businesses but also on the communities that rely on them for support and connection. As this situation develops, many in Salt Lake City are left wondering what the future holds for their cherished local bar.
