A devastating landslide in western Kenya has resulted in the deaths of at least 26 individuals, with recovery efforts temporarily suspended due to flash flooding in the region. The tragic incident, which unfolded on October 1, 2023, saw four additional bodies retrieved on Sunday, raising the toll as authorities grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.

Kipchumba Murkomen, the Interior Minister, reported that 25 people remain unaccounted for, prompting the government to intensify search operations. Military resources have been mobilised, with four aircraft deployed to assist rescue teams that are struggling to access the area. The landslide has rendered many roads impassable, complicating efforts to reach affected communities.

Search teams were forced to abandon their operations on Sunday due to a sudden surge of flash floods originating from a nearby hill in the Chesongoch area of Kenya’s Rift Valley region. The persistent heavy rains have not only hampered rescue efforts but have also caused widespread flooding across several counties, displacing thousands of residents.

In light of the ongoing situation, the government has issued warnings to residents living in areas prone to flooding and landslides. Authorities are urging these individuals to relocate to safer locations as heavy rains are forecasted to continue. Murkomen assured the public that the government would facilitate airlifting essential supplies to those in need. This includes support for 15 schools that have become isolated due to the adverse weather conditions, as well as the transportation of examination papers for students.

The government has also committed to covering medical expenses for over 30 injured individuals and providing resettlement assistance for families whose homes have been destroyed. Murkomen expressed his condolences, stating, “It is very sad that families have lost five to six immediate family members.”

Oscar Okum, the regional manager for the Kenya Red Cross, highlighted the ongoing risks in the Rift Valley area. “While we were conducting search and recovery operations, we encountered roads that had just been cleared being impacted again by new mudslides. It remains an active situation, and we encourage community members to seek safer grounds for their safety, lives, and livelihoods,” he stated.

As the situation develops, the challenges posed by the extreme weather conditions continue to affect the lives of many in western Kenya. The government’s response, alongside support from humanitarian organizations, aims to provide critical assistance in the wake of this tragedy.
