Urgent Recall: Uneviscerated Fish Sold Nationwide Poses Health Risk
URGENT UPDATE: A dangerous food recall has been issued for “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” produced by New Hoque & Sons Inc. in Maspeth, NY. The FDA confirmed that these fish were sold nationwide with their internal organs still intact, presenting a serious health risk due to potential botulism contamination.
Health officials from New York State and the FDA are taking immediate action as uneviscerated fish have been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. The recalled fish come in 10-12 pound clear plastic packages and are marked with an expiration date of 5/19/25 stamped on the bottom. The product UPC is 908172635412.
Authorities report that the sale of uneviscerated fish is strictly prohibited under New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations. “Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish,” the FDA stated, emphasizing the urgent nature of this recall.
Routine inspections by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets revealed the improperly processed fish, prompting swift action. Symptoms of botulism include dizziness, blurred or double vision, and difficulty speaking or swallowing. More severe symptoms can present as breathing difficulties, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. Consumers experiencing any of these symptoms are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this issue, but the potential for serious health consequences has left residents on high alert. Officials are urging anyone who purchased the “Dry Ghoinnya Fish” to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
For further inquiries, consumers can reach New Hoque & Sons Inc. at (718) 391-0992. This developing situation underscores the importance of food safety and awareness. Stay tuned for more updates as authorities continue to investigate this matter closely.
