Trump Endorses Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race, Mamdani Reacts Urgently
UPDATE: A shocking endorsement from President Donald Trump has ignited tensions in the heated New York City mayoral race, with Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani quick to respond. During a recent CBS News interview, Trump stated he would support former governor Andrew Cuomo over Mamdani if forced to choose, calling the situation a choice between “a bad Democrat and a communist.”
Mamdani, who has served as a state Assembly member since 2021, seized the opportunity to mock Cuomo’s endorsement. “Congratulations, Andrew Cuomo!” he tweeted, emphasizing the irony of receiving support from a president with low approval ratings in New York City.
This latest development comes as the mayoral election approaches on Tuesday night, with polls indicating Mamdani holds a significant lead over both Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Early voting data reveals unprecedented engagement, with 735,000 early ballots cast, marking the highest turnout for a non-presidential election in New York’s history.
In the final days of the campaign, Cuomo has faced criticism for what many are calling racially charged tactics, attempting to paint Mamdani as an outsider. He claimed Mamdani’s dual citizenship with Uganda indicates a lack of understanding of New York’s values and culture. Cuomo’s comments have drawn backlash, with Mamdani stating, “This is Andrew Cuomo’s final moments in public life, and he’s choosing to spend them making racist attacks.”
Political analysts are closely watching the surge in younger voter turnout, which could significantly impact the election outcome. Laura Tamman, a political scientist at Pace University, highlighted that more than 100,000 voters under 35 cast ballots in the last days of early voting, suggesting a potential advantage for Mamdani.
With the election just hours away, the implications of Trump’s endorsement and Cuomo’s controversial comments are sending shockwaves through the political landscape. Voters are urged to make their voices heard as the race heats up to a dramatic conclusion.
