The United States Senate has confirmed Lt. Gen. Christopher Eubank to assume leadership of Army Cyber Command, promoting him to the rank of three-star general. The decision, made on October 5, 2023, comes as part of a broader confirmation of eight nominees for various leadership roles within the Army.

Currently, Eubank serves as the special assistant to the commander of the Army Space and Missile Defense Command and the Army Forces Strategic Command. He has previously held positions as both deputy commander and commander of the Army Network Enterprise Technology Command. In his new role, Eubank will act as the service cyber component to CYBERCOM, overseeing cyber operations within Central Command, Africa Command, and Northern Command.

Transition of Command and Future Goals

Eubank will take over from Lt. Gen. Maria Barrett, who has led Army Cyber Command since May 2022 and is set to retire. The timeline for Eubank’s transition into command has not yet been established, according to a spokesperson for Army Cyber Command.

In recent years, Army Cyber Command has been actively involved in several pilot programs focused on artificial intelligence to enhance its capabilities. One notable initiative is the development of a monitoring tool called Panoptic Junction, which was selected by CYBERCOM to fulfill AI directives from the executive branch. This tool is designed for continuous monitoring of anomalous behavior, which is critical for maintaining cybersecurity.

Additionally, the command is working to cultivate tactical cyber forces that are skilled in both cyber and electronic warfare. These advancements are intended to enhance the operational effectiveness of military formations around the world.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, the leadership of Army Cyber Command under Eubank will be pivotal in adapting to new challenges. His extensive background in cyber operations and leadership within the Army positions him well to steer the command into a future that increasingly relies on advanced technology and cyber capabilities.
