Couples Live Off-Grid in Pacific Northwest After Housing Crisis
UPDATE: In a bold move to achieve their dream of living in the Pacific Northwest, a couple has embraced an off-grid lifestyle after being priced out of the local real estate market. Sally Marks and her partner, Carol, purchased a 4.6-acre wooded lot near Port Townsend, Washington, for $160,000, turning their dream into a reality in 2022.
The couple’s aspirations began in 2010 during a vacation to the region, where they fell in love with its stunning landscapes and vibrant community. As housing prices soared, often exceeding $500,000, they faced a disheartening reality. “We wanted to establish a foothold in the area, but the prices were just too high,” Marks stated in a recent interview.
After extensive searching, they discovered a wooded lot approximately 30 minutes from town, which lacked basic amenities but fit their budget. “It didn’t have power, sewer, or water, but it offered good cell service and WiFi connectivity,” Marks explained. Embracing the challenge, they decided to live off the grid.
They purchased a rugged 20-foot Airstream Basecamp for $65,000 to serve as their home. To support their off-grid lifestyle, the couple installed portable solar panels, developed a rainwater collection system, and even set up a battery-operated pump for convenience. “Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure, but we don’t regret our decision,” Marks shared.
The couple has come up with creative solutions to make their living conditions comfortable. They have set up an outdoor kitchen with a propane stove and a tent for dining and additional living space. Carol, who has joined a local band, also uses the tent as a rehearsal space.
Their property is landlocked, which means they pay a monthly fee to store Carol’s kayak at a nearby boat haven. This arrangement provides access to a marina just 8 miles away, complete with coin-operated hot showers and garbage disposal facilities. “We are conservationists, but we also appreciate some modern conveniences,” Marks noted.
As summer approaches, the couple prepares to enjoy the Pacific Northwest for three to five months each year before returning to their on-grid home in Arizona for the winter. They ensure their property is ready for the colder months by maintaining their riding lawn mower and fortifying dirt roads.
This inspiring story highlights the lengths individuals will go to find affordable living solutions in the face of soaring real estate prices. Marks and Carol have not only secured their dream home but have also created a unique lifestyle that allows them to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
As more people face housing challenges, their experience serves as a reminder of the potential for creative solutions. With a growing interest in sustainable living, Marks and Carol’s journey may inspire others to explore off-grid options in their quest for affordable housing.
This story showcases the human spirit’s resilience amid economic pressures, emphasizing that while the dream of homeownership may seem elusive, it is still attainable through innovative thinking and adaptability.
Stay tuned for more developments on affordable housing solutions and off-grid living trends.
