Suspect Found Guilty of Murdering 88-Year-Old in SF Beating
UPDATE: In a groundbreaking verdict, a jury has found Keonte Gathron guilty of murdering Yik Oi Huang, an 88-year-old grandmother, during a brutal attack in San Francisco in 2019. This urgent development marks a significant moment for justice as Gathron faces 25 counts related to this and multiple other crimes.
District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced the verdict on Tuesday, stating, “We are pleased to announce Mr. Gathron has been found guilty of numerous counts. Most importantly in the murder of Mrs. Huang, who was simply out doing her morning exercise.” The verdict comes after years of waiting for justice for Huang’s family, who endured immense pain following the tragic incident.
On January 3, 2020, Huang succumbed to her injuries sustained during a violent attack in Visitacion Valley, where she was on her morning walk. Gathron brutally assaulted her at a park before fleeing to her home across the street, where he committed further crimes. He was ultimately apprehended after another robbery incident, which led to his arrest.
“This verdict is a crucial step in holding Mr. Gathron accountable for his actions, particularly the devastating impact on Mrs. Huang’s family,” Jenkins added. The charges against Gathron also include robbery and carjackings prior to the deadly assault, as well as armed robberies and six additional attacks against victims of Asian descent.
The community’s response has been one of relief and solidarity. Huang’s family and advocates had previously expressed their desire for justice, highlighting the emotional toll of her suffering. A GoFundMe account from 2020 detailed her courageous struggle for life, stating, “She suffered through the massive pain and had been clinging for her life courageously.”
In memory of Yik Oi Huang, the park where she was attacked was renamed The Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park in June 2024. Community leaders hope the new name will foster healing and unity within the neighborhood.
Gathron is now facing a potential life sentence as a result of the jury’s decision. Sentencing will occur at a later date, with many awaiting the outcome to see justice fully served.
