Taiwanese Influencer Found Dead in Hotel Bathtub; Murder Probe Underway
A tragedy unfolded in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, when Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, known for her provocative online content, was found dead in a hotel bathtub on October 22, 2023. Authorities have since launched a murder investigation following the initial classification of her death as sudden. Hsieh, known in real life as Hsieh Yu-hsin, was discovered at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time at a hotel situated on Jalan Conlay, according to The Star.
The investigation intensified after Hsieh was reportedly with local rapper Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, at the time of her death. He was arrested the same day for alleged drug possession and use but was released on bail on October 24 after pleading not guilty, as confirmed by officer Datuk Fadil Marsus. Police found ecstasy pills in his possession and he later tested positive for multiple substances, including amphetamines and THC, as reported by the BBC.
In a translated statement posted on Instagram, Namewee expressed his grief over Hsieh’s death and denied using drugs. He stated, “The truth will be out when the police report is released,” reflecting the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the incident.
Investigation Details and Next Steps
The authorities have not publicly named Namewee as a suspect at this stage. They are currently reviewing surveillance footage and collecting statements from hotel staff to reconstruct Hsieh’s final hours. Officer Datuk Fadil Marsus emphasized the thoroughness of the inquiry, stating, “We will re-examine all the victim’s movements and that of the suspect we have identified. We expect to make an arrest soon and will provide updates from time to time.”
The cause of Hsieh’s death remains under investigation, with toxicology results pending. The police are focused on gathering comprehensive evidence as they seek to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
Hsieh, 31, garnered a significant following on social media, boasting over 547,000 followers on Instagram. She was known for her daring stunts, including a controversial incident last year where she removed her underwear in an Ikea store to style her hair. Her posts often featured bikini-clad images and provocative content, contributing to her notoriety.
As the investigation continues, many are left to ponder the circumstances surrounding her death and the implications of her final moments. The case has captured public attention, and updates from authorities are eagerly awaited.
