Voters Approve Spurs’ $311 Million Arena Plan in San Antonio

UPDATE: Voters in Bexar County, Texas have just approved a transformative plan that brings the San Antonio Spurs one step closer to a new downtown arena. With over 52% of the electorate backing the proposal, officials can now commit up to $311 million in venue taxes to fund a state-of-the-art multipurpose arena.

This urgent decision comes amid considerable opposition from various lawmakers and community groups, making the victory significant for the Spurs’ future. The team has pledged to invest at least $500 million in the construction and cover any cost overruns, ensuring a robust financial commitment to the project.

In a statement following the vote, Peter J. Holt, chairman of Spurs Sports and Entertainment, expressed gratitude and optimism: “We love this city, we love this county, and the county and the city love us back.” The Spurs’ proposal also anticipates generating approximately $1.4 billion in private development around the new arena, signaling a potential economic boost for the area.
