A migrant vessel sank near the Malaysia-Thailand border, leaving hundreds missing as search and rescue operations continue. On Sunday, the Malaysian maritime authority reported that ten survivors were rescued, along with one body. The vessel had departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar, carrying approximately 300 people when it encountered distress.

First Admiral Romli Mustafa, the director of the maritime authority for the northern Malaysian states of Kedah and Perlis, indicated that the search might uncover more victims at sea three days following the incident. Among the survivors found in the waters off Langkawi were three men from Myanmar, two men from the Rohingya community, and one Bangladeshi man. The sole body retrieved was identified as a Rohingya woman, according to state media outlet Bernama, which cited police chief Adzli Abu Shah.

The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group, frequently flee Myanmar, where they face significant persecution and are often denied citizenship. As they sought refuge in Malaysia, the migrants initially boarded a larger vessel. However, as they approached the border, they were instructed to transfer to three smaller boats, each carrying about 100 individuals, to evade detection by authorities.

The status of the remaining two boats remains uncertain, and the ongoing search-and-rescue operation continues to assess the situation. The Malaysian government has faced scrutiny over its handling of migrant crises in the region, and this incident underscores the desperate measures many take to escape dire circumstances.

Authorities have urged the international community to address the root causes of migration from Myanmar and provide support for those fleeing persecution. As the search progresses, the plight of the Rohingya and other migrants highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and policy reform in the region.
