Eagles Fans Rally Behind Young Cancer Patient with Hope
Christian Johnico, a 25-year-old from Durant, Oklahoma, is fighting stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has spread to other organs. For the past three months, his life has dramatically changed as he battles the disease, often needing assistance with basic tasks such as getting out of bed and moving around his home. Seeking connection and support, Johnico turned to Reddit in late October, posting about his diagnosis and expressing a desire to connect with fellow Eagles fans for game tickets.
While he has not yet received a response from the Philadelphia Eagles, his post has sparked an outpouring of support from the team’s community. The Eagles’ subreddit flooded him with 430 comments, many of which shared personal experiences with cancer and offered words of encouragement. Johnico expressed his surprise and gratitude for the overwhelming response, stating, “Oh my Lord, man, I cried all day long after I got those responses. I had no idea that I would get so many replies.”
Currently undergoing his second round of chemotherapy, Johnico is facing physical challenges, including the need for a walker and wheelchair due to weakened bones from the cancer. Despite these struggles, he has found renewed hope and strength from the supportive messages he receives daily from other Eagles fans who have battled or are battling cancer. He draws inspiration from the resilience of the team, especially from quarterback Jalen Hurts and coach Nick Sirianni. Johnico reflects on their words, saying, “You can’t be great without the greatness of others,” which resonates deeply with him during this difficult time.
Connection Through Football
Johnico’s connection to the Eagles began in 2005 when his aunts introduced him to the team while watching the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. Since then, he has been a die-hard fan, often watching games from his living room while wearing jerseys of players like Hurts, DeVonta Smith, and A.J. Brown. “Just waiting all week to watch the Eagles gives me hope,” Johnico shared. Friends often join him, helping alleviate feelings of loneliness.
Inspired by the responses to his Reddit post, Johnico received an offer from an Eagles season ticket holder for tickets to a game. He is considering attending the Week 18 matchup against the Washington Commanders or choosing any game next season, stating, “It would change my entire life.” Additionally, he has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with his medical expenses. To date, he has raised $5,337 of his $7,500 goal, with donations pouring in from supporters across the country.
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, including nausea and fatigue from chemotherapy, Johnico remains determined to keep fighting. He acknowledges the loneliness that comes with his condition but emphasizes the importance of community. “Everyone around you, they don’t really know how it feels unless they’ve been through it,” he said.
Hope for the Future
Johnico’s love for the Eagles is rooted in memorable moments, particularly during the 2017 season when the team won its first Super Bowl. He fondly recalls plays by former quarterback Carson Wentz and moments from last season that captivated him. As he looks to the future, he hopes to be present for more unforgettable Eagles moments.
Eagles kicker Jake Elliott shared the impact that the team strives to have on fans facing adversity. “If we can offer any sort of distraction from that reality, I think that’s what means the most,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of providing support during tough times.
As Johnico anticipates completing his treatment by February 2024, he holds onto the hope of being in remission and celebrating a successful Eagles season, ideally culminating in another Super Bowl victory. “If you’re going through the same thing, all I can say is keep fighting,” he advised others facing similar battles. “Just really lean into your support system. It has helped me a lot, and I’m sure it will help you as well.”
