Iran Strengthens Alliances in Iraq and Lebanon, Critiques West
Iran is intensifying its diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, strengthening ties with allies in Iraq and Lebanon while openly criticizing the United States and Israel for what it describes as coercive diplomacy. In a recent conference held in Tehran, Iranian officials emphasized their commitment to bolstering regional alliances.
During the conference on international law, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Ali Hassan Khalil, the Political Advisor to the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament. The gathering included around 350 participants, featuring diplomats, academics, and analysts from countries such as France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. According to Iranian state media, the discussions focused on various bilateral and regional issues, highlighting the perceived threats to international law, particularly from Western nations.
The Iranian leadership is using this platform to portray a narrative that international law is under siege, primarily due to actions taken by the US and its allies. The conference also addressed topics such as “International Law Under Siege” and “Revisiting Regional Security Arrangements: Key elements and determining factors.” This rhetoric aligns with Iran’s broader strategy to solidify its influence in the region while distancing itself from Western powers.
Iran’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in Sudan has also been a focal point of its recent diplomatic activities. The Iranian government has expressed support for the Sudanese army against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a stance that positions it at odds with nations like the UAE. Clashes in Sudan began on April 15, 2023, stemming from disputes over military integration following a coup in 2021. Despite international mediation efforts, the violence continues to escalate, drawing Iran’s attention and involvement.
In a show of solidarity, Iran’s President congratulated Shia al-Sudani, Iraq’s Prime Minister, on the success of his party in the recent elections. Iran maintains strong ties with Shi’ite militias in Iraq, which further amplifies its regional influence. The Iranian Administration spokesperson, Fatemeh Mohajerani, criticized Western diplomatic approaches, labeling them as one-sided and coercive.
In an interview with Al-Mayadeen, a pro-Iranian outlet, Mohajerani underscored Iran’s commitment to self-defense and its strategic partnerships with neighboring countries. She pointed out that Iran has been enhancing its missile capabilities in response to what it perceives as aggression, particularly from US-backed Israeli actions.
Regarding nuclear negotiations, Mohajerani noted that Iran remains engaged with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and continues to adhere to the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, despite claiming that it has only suspended its implementation rather than withdrawing entirely.
Former Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif added another layer to the discourse by questioning the motives behind Israeli military actions against Iran. He suggested that for Israel, “peace is a vital threat,” indicating that the country perceives diplomatic resolutions as detrimental to its interests. Zarif asserted that the US has failed to establish a unipolar world order, as countries like Iran, China, and Russia seek a multipolar balance of power.
As Iran navigates these complex geopolitical dynamics, it appears committed to reinforcing its alliances while maintaining a critical stance against Western influences. The unfolding situation in the Middle East underscores the intricate web of relationships and conflicts that continue to shape this volatile region.
