U.S. and NATO Troops Conduct Drone Combat Exercise in Poland

A recent exercise in Poland showcased a combined effort between the U.S. Army and NATO allies, focusing on drone-on-drone combat. Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment successfully launched small interceptor drones from a pickup truck to neutralize attacking drones. This training took place at the Nowa Dęba Training Area and followed a two-week course that included classroom instruction, simulations, and practical drills.

The interceptor drones, equipped with advanced electro-optical sensors and radar, form a mobile defense system capable of swiftly responding to incoming threats. This system is designed to be easily transportable in light tactical vehicles, enabling rapid deployment and assembly by a crew of just four personnel. During the exercise, the soldiers effectively fired the drones to intercept small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and managed to recover them using parachutes for future training sessions.

These interceptor drones are primarily intended as expendable munitions, particularly effective against one-way attack drones, often referred to as “suicide drones.” They have been previously deployed in conflict zones such as Ukraine. According to a service release, Brig. Gen. Curtis King, commanding general of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, emphasized the lethal efficiency and cost-effectiveness of this technology, stating, “It’s very lethal, very effective, but the key piece here is that it’s cost effective.”

Strengthening NATO’s Eastern Defense

The exercise was part of NATO’s Operation Eastern Sentry, aimed at bolstering the air defenses of member countries in Eastern Europe. This initiative comes in response to increasing drone incursions and aims to enhance the military readiness of NATO’s eastern flank.
