Enhance Your Outdoor Space for Comfort During Cold Weather
As cold weather sets in, many homeowners are seeking ways to make their outdoor spaces more inviting. With temperatures dropping, it’s essential to create a comfortable environment for gatherings or simply enjoying the outdoors. Experts from Maine offer valuable insights into transforming outdoor areas into cozy retreats for the chilly fall and winter months.
Smart Site Selection
When designing an outdoor space, the initial step involves choosing the right location. Kerry Lewis, a licensed landscape architect based in Cumberland, emphasizes the importance of evaluating site conditions. Homeowners should identify areas that capture sunlight effectively, whether for enjoying a morning coffee or basking in the afternoon light. “Look for that sunny pocket late in the day,” Lewis advises.
For those without ideal sunny spots, Gail Gross, an interior designer from Brunswick, suggests finding a sheltered area to protect against the wind. “Prioritize sun exposure and wind protection,” she notes. Ideally, homeowners should aim for a space that incorporates both elements, but flexibility is key if such a location is not available.
Heating Solutions
Adding heat is a straightforward way to enhance comfort outdoors. Fire pits or outdoor fireplaces are popular options, but homeowners must first check local fire codes. According to Lewis, regulations in Maine may restrict fire pits in densely populated areas due to air quality concerns, rather than safety issues.
When considering fire pits, homeowners should decide between portable and permanent options, as well as wood-fired or gas models. The price range can vary significantly. “You can purchase a portable fire pit for a couple of hundred dollars or invest in a built-in stone or granite model that could cost tens of thousands,” Lewis explains.
For a family-friendly alternative, Gross recommends outdoor pizza ovens, which not only provide heat but also serve a practical purpose. “This radiates heat and protects children from open flames,” she adds. Additionally, commercial gas or electric patio heaters are available, although they can be challenging to manage. “The freestanding ones with wheels offer flexibility but can be cumbersome,” Gross warns.
Creating Windbreaks
To shield outdoor areas from harsh winds, planting evergreen shrubs can be effective. Lewis suggests that homeowners create microclimates within their seating spaces. In Maine, for instance, prevailing winter winds typically come from the northwest, so positioning greenery in that direction can provide significant protection.
Certain types of trees, such as needled evergreens, are particularly effective as windbreaks because they retain their foliage year-round. “Junipers and arborvitae are excellent choices,” Lewis states. For quick solutions, using lean-tos or shade sails can also block wind without the need for planting.
Enclosing Your Space
Installing screens or windows can help retain warmth and keep out the wind. For those starting from scratch, ensuring architectural features that support seasonal use is crucial. If enclosing a porch, Gross advises homeowners to prioritize ventilation, as even the best-designed spaces can face airflow issues over time.
Cozy Furnishings and Accessories
Small changes can significantly enhance the comfort of outdoor areas. Gross suggests using winter-themed pillow covers made from materials like fleece or wool to transition summer furniture into autumn-ready pieces. Additionally, keeping blankets accessible in a chest near the patio door can provide quick warmth for guests.
For those willing to invest more, selecting cushioned furniture can create a warmer atmosphere. Lewis highlights the importance of considering the furniture’s mobility, allowing for easy relocation to sunnier spots. Maintenance is also a factor to keep in mind, as outdoor furniture needs protection from the elements.
As homeowners prepare their outdoor spaces for the colder months, the approach will vary based on individual resources, creativity, and preferences. With thoughtful planning, enjoying time outside despite the chill can become a delightful experience.
