Ex-Ambassador: Trump’s Peace Plan for Ukraine ‘Egregious’ and Weak
URGENT UPDATE: Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, has sharply criticized President Donald Trump‘s latest peace proposal concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine. In a newly published op-ed in The Kyiv Independent, McFaul describes the 28-point plan as “egregious,” arguing it undermines American interests and reveals a significant weakness in U.S. foreign policy.
According to McFaul, the Trump administration is pressuring Ukraine to accept terms that heavily favor Russia, including a prohibition on joining NATO and the relinquishment of long-range missiles. The plan also demands that Ukraine cede territory currently occupied by Russian forces, including regions not fully controlled by Russia. “This Putin plan does not serve American national interests,” McFaul stated emphatically.
The former ambassador’s op-ed, released earlier today, categorically condemns the proposal, asserting that it embarrassingly highlights Trump’s previous outreach to Vladimir Putin, which has yielded no substantial concessions from Russia. McFaul insists that these terms not only weaken Ukraine but also compromise U.S. security and prosperity.
“This plan includes several ‘egregious’ points,” McFaul noted, referencing restrictions that would limit the size of Ukraine’s military. “The United States needs a strong Ukraine to help contain Putin’s Russia. Many of these provisions do the exact opposite; they weaken Ukraine.”
The urgent backlash from McFaul, who served as ambassador from 2012 to 2014, underscores growing concerns among U.S. officials and experts about the implications of Trump’s diplomatic approach. As tensions continue to escalate in Eastern Europe, this critique of the proposed peace plan could have significant ramifications for international relations and U.S. foreign policy.
As this story develops, analysts and political commentators are closely monitoring the reactions from both U.S. and Ukrainian officials regarding Trump’s controversial proposal. Experts warn that acceptance of such a plan could embolden Russia’s aggressive stance in the region and challenge the very principles of international sovereignty and security.
