Honda has announced a significant recall affecting over 400,000 Civic vehicles due to a defect that poses a serious safety risk. The recall, made public on October 31, 2025, targets models produced between 2016 and 2021. The issue stems from a factory flaw involving the steel seat anchors for the aluminum wheels, which were not manufactured to specification. As a result, the wheel nuts may loosen, leading to the potential detachment of the wheel while driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this defect could lead to a loss of control, significantly increasing the likelihood of an accident or injury. Honda confirmed that the wheel detachment issue was first identified during a routine inspection in Japan in 2024. The company stated that some improperly completed wheels were mistakenly shipped as finished products due to an incident at a supplier’s factory in Italy.

Notification and Vehicle Checks

Beginning on October 31, Honda started notifying affected vehicle owners. The company aims to complete these communications by December 8. Vehicle owners can also check if their Civic is included in the recall by entering their vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website. For immediate assistance, Honda has set up a customer service hotline at 1-888-234-2138.

Honda has assured customers that all inspections and necessary repairs will be conducted at official dealerships free of charge. The company has emphasized its commitment to safety and acknowledges the inconvenience this recall may cause.

While no injuries have been reported related to this specific defect, Honda is currently facing legal challenges unrelated to this recall. The company is dealing with a lawsuit concerning warranty repairs for defective 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines found in various models, including the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, and Acura RDX from model years 2016 to 2022.

As this recall unfolds, Honda is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of its customers and the integrity of its products. The company remains committed to resolving this issue promptly and efficiently, reinforcing its reputation for quality in the automotive industry.
