Residents of Glen Rose, Texas, are vocally opposing a proposed high-voltage transmission line by Oncor Electric, which they fear could severely impact Dinosaur Valley State Park. The park is not only a treasured natural asset but also a significant economic driver, attracting approximately 230,000 visitors annually due to its famed dinosaur tracks embedded in the nearby Paluxy River.

The transmission line, which is designed to bolster the state’s power grid, runs about 250 miles from the park to a substation in West Texas. This infrastructure project, aimed at reducing power outages and enhancing the electrification of oil and gas operations in the Permian Basin, has ignited widespread concern among local residents. They argue that the line’s proposed route could encircle the park, leading to significant visual and environmental degradation.

Local officials and community members are particularly worried about the potential impact on wildlife habitats, migratory bird corridors, and the overall aesthetic value of the park. Mayor Joe Boles expressed the community’s fears that the transmission towers, which could reach heights of 130 to 140 feet, would disrupt the park’s “primitive, prehistoric” appearance.

Community Mobilization Against the Project

Grassroots organizations, including the Dinosaur Valley–Paluxy River Protection Alliance, are rallying support against the proposed transmission line. They have organized events to create awareness, such as sign-making sessions and merchandise sales, encouraging residents to voice their concerns directly to Oncor. State Representative Helen Kerwin has also joined the fight, calling Dinosaur Valley State Park the “crown jewel” of Texas’ park system and emphasizing the need to protect it.

Concerns regarding the environmental impact have been raised, particularly the lack of a comprehensive environmental assessment that considers the effects on migratory birds and potential habitat fragmentation. Residents fear that the construction and presence of the transmission line could lead to irreversible damage to the park’s ecosystem and deter tourists.

Oncor has stated that it has engaged with numerous landowners and held public meetings to address community concerns. The company acknowledges the importance of the project for the state and underscores its commitment to ongoing community engagement. According to Oncor, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) will evaluate the proposed transmission line routes, taking into account recreational areas, historical and aesthetic values, and environmental integrity during its review process.

Next Steps and Ongoing Debate

Oncor plans to submit its proposal to the PUC in February 2024, at which point the public will have further opportunities to submit written comments. Landowners affected by the project can also request a state administrative hearing if they believe their property will be adversely impacted.

The situation in Glen Rose highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing necessary infrastructure development with the imperative to protect natural resources and address local community concerns.
