Greater Cleveland Food Bank Distributes Record 320,000 Pounds of Food
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank has achieved an unprecedented milestone, distributing a record 320,000 pounds of food in a single day. This surge in demand comes as the ongoing government shutdown has suspended Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for over a month, leaving many families in urgent need of support.
Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the food bank’s recent distribution is nearly three times its daily average. Workers quickly loaded pallets onto trucks, striving to meet the overwhelming needs of families facing food insecurity without federal assistance.
Food Bank’s Response to Growing Demand
According to Karen Pozna, the food bank’s director of communications, the organization is preparing to distribute 7 million pounds of food in November, a significant increase from its typical 5 million pounds. She emphasized that many individuals relying on SNAP are often employed, holding more than one job to make ends meet. The absence of SNAP benefits has created a challenging situation for these families.
“The shutdown has entered its sixth week, affecting over 1 million Ohioans who rely on SNAP benefits,” Pozna stated. She further explained that the food bank is committed to providing consistent support to those in need during this difficult time.
Call for Community Support
To maintain this elevated distribution pace, Pozna highlighted the urgent need for increased community donations, both in terms of time and financial support. “We are going to do our best to keep up this pace. We want to be a steady source of nutritious food for our partners and neighbors in northeast Ohio, and we can’t do it alone,” she said.
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s commitment to serving its community has never been more critical. As it strives to meet the growing demand, the organization urges residents to contribute in any way they can, whether through monetary donations or volunteering.
This remarkable effort by the Greater Cleveland Food Bank underscores the importance of community support in addressing food insecurity, especially during challenging times when federal assistance is unavailable.
