NYC Mayor-Elect Mamdani Names Dean Fuleihan as Deputy Mayor
Zohran Mamdani, the incoming mayor of New York City, announced on November 13, 2023, the appointment of Dean Fuleihan as his first deputy mayor. This move aims to solidify Mamdani’s fiscal policy agenda as he transitions into office. Fuleihan, a seasoned veteran in government finance, brings with him over four decades of experience, having previously served both as budget director and deputy mayor under former Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Fuleihan’s extensive background includes significant roles in fiscal and policy capacities within the New York State Legislature, where he was based in Albany. His appointment is viewed as a strategic choice to navigate the complex financial landscape of the city, particularly as it faces ongoing economic challenges. Mamdani emphasized the importance of having a skilled leader in place to implement his policy initiatives effectively.
In addition to Fuleihan, Mamdani appointed Elle Bisgaard-Church as his chief of staff, who will lead City Hall operations. Bisgaard-Church played a crucial role as a principal campaign strategist during Mamdani’s run for mayor, and her promotion reflects a commitment to fostering a strong leadership team. Earlier this month, Mamdani also revealed an all-women transition team, underscoring his focus on diversity and representation within his administration.
The appointments signify a shift in leadership style for New York City, moving towards a more progressive approach under Mamdani’s democratic-socialist platform. With a focus on fiscal responsibility and social equity, Mamdani aims to address the pressing issues facing the city, including affordable housing, public safety, and economic development.
As Mamdani prepares to take office, the appointment of experienced officials like Fuleihan and Bisgaard-Church is seen as vital for ensuring a smooth transition and effective governance. The new mayor’s administration is expected to begin its work in January 2024, and the forthcoming months will be crucial for laying the groundwork for his policy initiatives.
