Ocean City Revitalizes Historic Lot for Community Recreation
Ocean City, New Jersey, is set to revitalize a long-vacant lot, turning it into a vibrant public recreation space. The area, located between 16th and 17th streets along Simpson Avenue and Haven Avenue, was historically the site of the Perry-Egan Car Dealership. Following its acquisition by the city, plans are underway to transform the 85,688-square-foot lot into an open space that will enhance community life.
Investment in Community Beautification
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which struck in 2012, Ocean City has increased its focus on beautification and redevelopment. Over the past 13 years, various projects have emerged, aiming to modernize the town for both residents and seasonal visitors. These initiatives include significant upgrades to the boardwalk and the reconstruction of popular recreational areas.
The new project at the former car dealership site reflects Ocean City’s commitment to improving public spaces. Currently, the lot serves as overflow parking for the Ocean City Public Library, Community Center, and Aquatic/Fitness Center. However, as construction begins, visitors will need to utilize the primary parking lots to access these facilities.
Historical Context and Future Plans
In the 1990s, the vicinity around 16th Street was a bustling commercial hub, featuring a range of businesses, including the CVS Pharmacy, Superfresh Supermarket, and laundromats. By 2025, only the CVS Pharmacy will remain within walking distance of the library and community center, highlighting the area’s significant changes over the decades.
The anticipated beautification project will not only provide a recreational space for the community but is also expected to improve traffic flow in an area that was once a busy commercial corridor. While construction is ongoing, residents and visitors may experience minor delays along Simpson and Haven avenues.
As Ocean City continues to invest in its infrastructure and community amenities, these efforts signal a broader trend among coastal towns to enhance both aesthetics and functionality for the benefit of all who visit or call these places home.
