X Maintains Dominance in U.S. Social Media Landscape, Pew Reports
Pew Research Center’s latest report reveals that X, formerly known as Twitter, continues to hold a prominent position in the U.S. social media landscape despite emerging competitors. According to the report released this week, approximately 21% of U.S. adults indicated they have used X, significantly outpacing newer platforms such as Threads and Bluesky, which have captured usage rates of 8% and 4% respectively.
While X is not the largest social media platform overall, it remains a leader among applications that focus on short, real-time text posts in a vertical feed. The competitive landscape has intensified since Elon Musk acquired Twitter and rebranded it as X in October 2022. Changes implemented under Musk’s leadership, particularly regarding content moderation and a political shift, have prompted some users to explore alternatives. Platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky have emerged, alongside various startups attempting to rival X, including Spill, Post, T2 (Pebble), and Hive. Nevertheless, many of these startups have since ceased operations.
Pew’s findings illustrate that X’s grip on the market remains strong. Even with the substantial resources available to Meta, its competitor Threads has not surpassed X in user engagement.
In detail, Pew reported that 21% of U.S. adults have used X, while 8% have turned to Threads, and 3% have used Truth Social. Despite the presence of these competitors, X has not experienced a significant decline in user engagement over the years. In fact, a report from earlier this year indicated that 22% of U.S. adults used X, a slight decrease from 23% in 2021, when the platform was still operating under the name Twitter.
The report further highlights that established platforms such as YouTube and Facebook dominate U.S. social media usage, with 84% and 71% of adults respectively claiming to use these services. Other significant platforms include Instagram, with 50%, TikTok at 37%, WhatsApp at 32%, Reddit at 26%, and Snapchat at 25%.
Notably, many of these platforms have seen increased adoption over time. TikTok, for instance, rose from 21% in 2021 to its current usage rate, while Instagram’s user base has expanded from 40% to 50% in the same period. WhatsApp usage has also grown from 23% to 32%, and Reddit’s user engagement has climbed from 18% to 26%.
The social media landscape is particularly different for U.S. teenagers. While YouTube remains the leading platform, the preferences of this demographic diverge, with TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat trailing closely behind.
As the social media space evolves, the data from Pew Research Center suggests that while alternatives to X are developing, the platform maintains a strong foothold among U.S. adults, illustrating the complexities and dynamics of user engagement in this competitive sector.
